Frequently Asked Questions.

What is Ground School?

The Aviation Institute started the Ground School course in an effort to get Omaha and the surrounding communities flying. It is also set up as a safety refresher for current pilots. It is a 11 week session and all are invited to attend.

Do I have to be a pilot to join?

No! No flight experience is necessary to take the ground school. This course satisfies the ground requirements for recreational, sport, and private pilot ratings. If you are a current pilot you can use this course as a refresher to go over important safety issues.

I can’t make it to all of the classes, what do I do?

If you are taking the ground school we encourage you to attend all sessions. If this is not possible, please contact the instructor for what you should do. If you are taking it as a safety refresher you are not required to attend every session but we do ask that you let us know what days you will be attending so we can anticipate the class size.

What materials will be used?

We will be using Bob Gardner’s Complete Private Pilot textbook from ASA. You will also need a FAR/AIM, Omaha Sectional, E6-B, and a plotter. You may also want to bring along a notebook and pencil to take notes during class. If you submit the advanced testing fee you will be loaned out the textbook, plotter, and E6-B.

Where do I obtain these materials?

Any local airport will have plotters, E6-Bs, FAR/AIMs, and Omaha Sectionals for purchase. You may also go online to ASA’s website to purchase these materials as well as the textbook. Their website is http://www.asa2fly.com

When can I take the FAA exam?

You must first take a pre-test and score at least an 80% or above to be able to take the FAA written exam. You must also complete reading assignments and show a satisfactory understanding of the materials. Once you have the written permission from the instructor you may take the FAA written exam anytime during normal business hours in the Aviation Resource Center, located in Engineering 040.
