Flight Training Requirements

All candidates must be able to read, speak, write, and understand English , as well as pass FAA aeronautical knowledge tests (except multi-engine) and FAA practical tests for certificate or rating.

**Students obtaining their first medical certificate are encouraged to obtain at least a second-class medical in lieu of the third-class in order to determine future ability to qualify as a commercial pilot.

Private: AVN 1020, 1024, 1030

17 years old; read, speak, write and understand English; Current FAA Medical (Third-Class minimum)

FAR Part 61: Minimum 40 hours flight time (minimum 20 with instructor, minimum 10 solo)

FAR Part 141: Minimum 35 hours flight time (20 with instructor, 15 solo)  

Instrument: AVN 2170, 2174

Private Pilot Certificate; read, speak, write, and understand English; current FAA Medical (Third-Class minimum)

FAR Part 61: 40 hours instrument flight time (30 in an airplane, 10 in a flight training device)

FAR Part 141: 35 hours instrument instruction (25 in an airplane, 10 in a flight training device)

Commercial: AVN 2180, 2184

18 years old; read, speak, write, and understand English; current FAA Medical (Third-Class minimum to take commercial practical test; Second-Class minimum to exercise commercial pilot privileges)

FAR Part 61: Minimum 250 total hours flight time

FAR Part 141: Minimum 190 total hours flight time

Multi-engine: AVN 3400

Private Pilot Certificate; Current FAA Medical (Third-Class minimum)

No specific flight time requirements

Flight Instructor: AVN 3190, 3194, 3300, 3304, 4030

18 years old; read, speak, write, and understand English; Commercial Certificate (or ATP) with instrument rating; Current FAA Medical (Third-Class minimum); no specific flight time required

 

Estimated Costs for Flight Training

The following costs are estimates based upon obtaining specific flight certificates and ratings with average requirements, not minimum requirements as established by Part 61 of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAA). These costs may be higher or lower, depending upon individual students abilities in fulfilling requirements to meet FAA standards.

Flight costs do not include tuition: Resident: $154.75; Non-resident: $456.00 (2007-2008 rates).
